What's this all about?

We love whole grains! We have found that we prefer their flavor. They are also far healthier than the refined foods which characterize the typical modern diet.

Switching to whole grains helps maintain a low glycemic diet. That means you will have more sustainable energy levels throughout the day, and probably fewer problems with weight control.

We created this website with one goal: to build an online community of like-minded people who either share our enthusiasm about whole grains or just want to learn more about them.

I came here today through Tastespotting. It looks wonderful!!! I can't decide if the first recipe I'll try is Brazilian Brown Rice, or Sweet Potato Waffles.......

Hi Mary!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm so glad you found us. Don't you just love tastespotting.com?

Brown rice, prepared in the Brazilian style, has become one of our family's staple grains. It's such a simple preparation that we make it a few times a week. We love the texture and the loose grains that result. We prefer it to sticky steamed, or plain boiled, rice.

The sweet potato waffles on the other hand are a real treat. We bake sweet potatoes regularly so we usually will have one come Sunday morning when we get the urge. They take a little time and effort, but they are well worth it.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Let us know what you think after you try them.

Here is another Mary that discovered the site through tastespotting!
I see a lot of interesting recipes I would like to try, and I look forward to more being added.
I was wondering if nutritional info would be available in the future? No big deal, but it would be a bonus.
I love the design and layout of the website, nice and clean and simple.

Hi Mary! I'm so glad you found us through tastespotting.com. Thanks for the feedback on the recipes and website. Clean and simple is precisely what we are aiming for. We are currently adding about 2 new recipes each week and, of course, we welcome any additional contribution from our readers.

I'm looking into some ways to add nutritional information to the recipes and I may have just found the right resource for this. I'll post an update here as things progress.

I've examined a couple of options for gathering nutritional information for the recipes. The best source I have located is nutritiondata.com. Unfortunately their process is quite tedious and the license to use the resulting label is only available to printed media. The quote below is from their site:
QUOTE:

At present I don't have the time or resources to do this for every recipe we publish. I'll revisit this in the near future, but for the time being don't expect to see nutritional information published with each recipe.

Thanks for the question, Mary. I wish there was a way we could accommodate your request.

Hi! I recently discovered your site via tastespotting and i am so glad i did! I've made the chicken chili, brazilian rice, banana bread and even my own version of your temaki with great success. i, too, am all about the whole grains and it's so nice to have reliable recipes that are healthy and super delicious. so, thank you! and keep up the good work.

aloha from hawaii,
jenny

ps. people here are very particular about their banana bread and i've gotten a lot of positive feedback from your recipe. mostly, the loaf is magically disappearing at rapid speed!

Hi Jenny,

Thank you so much for the feedback! It makes our effort well worth it. We are also crazy about that banana bread. It never lasts around here either.

Aloha!

Hello! Very excited about your website! Can't wait to try some recipes!
I would like to submit a recipe I have come up with for steel cut oatmeal, walnut and date cookies. They are made with applesause instead of oil or butter and I use whole grain flour. They also are made with either raw sugar (very little) or brown sugar Splenda, depending on your personal preference. Everyone that has tried them loves them and they are so healthy. Please review my recipe for your consideration in posting for your members.
Thanks, Ruthie Brock, Acton CA

Healthy Steel Cut Oatmeal Cookies

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

1 cup raw turbinado sugar (OR 1/2 cup brown sugar Splenda)
1 cup eggbeaters (OR 4 eggs)
2 cups applesauce (OR 1 ½ cups butter)
2 tsp. vanilla
3 cups whole grain flour
4 cups Steel cut Oats
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
4 heaping tsp. cinnamon
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 ½ cups chopped dates, raisins, craisins, choc. chips or diced apples

No mixer needed! Just a big spoon or spatula!

Mix applesauce, eggbeaters, vanilla and sugar together in bowl to dissolve sugar.
Add dry ingredients. Stir in dates or raisins etc, and nuts.

Spray cookie sheets with non-stick spray. Drop by spoonfuls on cookie sheets and bake 15 minutes at 375 degrees. Cool and store in zip lock or air-tight container. Refrigerate or Freeze for longer storage.

Makes 4 dozen cookies
