What's this all about?

We love whole grains! We have found that we prefer their flavor. They are also far healthier than the refined foods which characterize the typical modern diet.

Switching to whole grains helps maintain a low glycemic diet. That means you will have more sustainable energy levels throughout the day, and probably fewer problems with weight control.

We created this website with one goal: to build an online community of like-minded people who either share our enthusiasm about whole grains or just want to learn more about them.

healthy steel cut oatmeal cookie

This is a recipe I have come up with for steel cut oatmeal, walnut and date cookies. They are made with applesause instead of oil or butter and I use whole grain flour. They also are made with either raw sugar (very little) or brown sugar Splenda, depending on your personal preference. Everyone that has tried them loves them and they are so healthy.

Healthy Steel Cut Oatmeal Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup raw turbinado sugar (OR 1/2 cup brown sugar Splenda)
  • 1 cup eggbeaters (OR 4 eggs)
  • 2 cups applesauce (OR 1 ½ cups butter)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 cups whole grain flour
  • 4 cups Steel cut Oats
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 4 heaping tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped dates, raisins, craisins, choc. chips or diced apples

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees
  2. No mixer needed! Just a big spoon or spatula!
  3. Mix applesauce, eggbeaters, vanilla and sugar together in bowl to dissolve sugar.
  4. Add dry ingredients. Stir in dates or raisins etc, and nuts.
  5. Spray cookie sheets with non-stick spray.
  6. Drop by spoonfuls on cookie sheets and bake 15 minutes at 375 degrees.
  7. Cool and store in zip lock or air-tight container.
  8. Refrigerate or Freeze for longer storage.

We used the applesauce and added cranberries. First batch 15 minutes- cooked too long- really crunchy.
2nd batch 13 minutes- still a little crunchy
3rd batch 12 minutes added 3/4 cup applesauce. My wife and 3-1/2 year old and 23 month old girls love 'em. I feel I need to perfect a little further. Need them to be moist and soft chew. Great ingredients!! :)

Can you use regular oatmeal? I am looking for a low cal oatmeal cookie that would rate low on the glycemic index. I like this recipe and want to try it. All I have is regular oatmeal and I hope that is okay to use.

Thanks for your input.

I just made these cookies using butter instead of applesauce and chocolate chips instead of fruit and they turned out to be delicious. The oats were just hard enough to add texture without being too crunchy. These cookies are great--thank you so much for posting the recipe!

Why all the fuss about "steel cut oats"? Why not try "old fashion rolled oats"? Still whole grain without any possibility of gravel texture.
My diet does not like wheat, so am wanting to try ground up oatmeal or rice as whole grain flour.
How does that sound?
Please leave a post if you have any feedback.
Thank you

I am going to try this recipe. But I would think it would be better to cook the oats first to assure soft cookies.

I eat steel cut oats for B-fast almost everyday, when ever I am short for time and rush the cooking time, they come out crunchier than I like.

You really have to cook real steel cut oats, even Mc'Canns "quick and easy."

Im excited to try to try these cookies. So the oats are not cooked, and the applesauce should take care of the moisture right? Any how thank you for the recipe, everyone at the salon is into health and wellness, should be a nice treat to bake.....Happy Holidays! :) Evelyn

I just made these. I love to bake and maybe it's the oats that I used, but they are very yucky. I'm sorry that I used all of my raisins in this recipe. Maybe I should have added more brown sugar? I used McCann's Irish oatmeal.

Thanks so much for the recipe! I kind of used what I had on hand...Quaker Steel Cut Oats, brown Splenda, and I only had small amounts of this and that, so that's what I used...two boxes of raisins, pecans leftover from Christmas, half a bag of mini marshmallows, about a cup of chocolate chips. Only had two lunch packs of applesauce, so I used that and a cup of Shedd Spread. They are yummy, but needed more sweetner. I think I may ice them just to add sweetness, but I will definitely make them again.

Are these supposed to be dry? I'm not the greatest baker, so my baked goods usually do not turn out the way I expect them to, but these turned out really dry. I used butter instead of applesauce and I had to half the recipe because I had less oats than I thought, but I soaked the oats for a few minutes before adding them to the mix. Maybe the oats volume increased too much? I don't know. They taste good with coffee in the morning. :)

I made these cookies using one all purpose white and one half whole grain wheat. I used Stop and Shop's Nature's Promise Steel Cut Oats and 2 Tblsps of butter and homemade applesauce. I also used 3 tsp. of freshly ground cinnamon and 1 tsp of freshly ground nutmeg. I steeped the raisins in boiling water 3 minutes before adding to the cookie dough. Everything else was exactly as in the recipe. These turned out to be the best cookies I have ever eaten. They were soft and chewy with a slight chrunch from the oats. The fresh spices gave them a wonderful flavor and aroma. Great basic recipe. Chef Dave

Mine turned out like
Ellen's first did -
dry and oats hard.
I really want to
know what I did
wrong. I used WW
pastry flour - apple
sauce - followed recipe.
HELP!

I made these but was

disappointed.
used WW flour - apple
sauce and pretty much
followed recipe. Oats
turned out harder than
I would like. Had to
modify baking time -
350 degrees - 10 min.
Perhaps first cooking
steel cut oaks is the
answer.

My guess is that ellen followed the directions to a tee and didn't cook the oats first. Perhaps the recipe should be modified to eliminate any confusion.

We put the oatmeal in the applesauce first while we gathered the other ingrediants and the cookies are great.

My husband is 82 years old. He said his mother used to make oatmeal cookies from freshly harvested groats (oats made the way God made them..not cut or rolled). He said she would make "cooked groats" for breakfast, & what was leftover in the cooking pot, she made into delicious oatmeal cookies, by the time he got home from school. He said they were crispy on edges & soft in the middle. Just plain with cinnamon in them, no raisins or fruit. He said the groats were like soft little nuggets, sort of like soft nuts. He has been trying to help me find a recipe, so I think I will try your recipe, plain, no fruit, but with cinnamon & steel cut oats.
